An Evening of Wine Tasting - chez Mrs. Elisa Barthelemy at the Official Residence of the French Consul General
No. 8 Pollock's Path, once known as The Ridge, was one of the earliest homes for Europeans erected on the Peak. Situated on one of the highest points, it enjoys a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour, the Aberdeen Channel and East Lamma Channel. The house was built between 1880s and 1890s in the Queen Anne Revival architectural style and offers a mixture of classical features including projecting cornices, columns, arched window heads and features derived from Dutch architecture (such as Dutch gables and tall chimney stacks).
Throughout most of The Ridge's history, especially the first half of the 20th century, the house was owned by the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Co. Ltd., forerunner of the Cable and Wireless Ltd., a major player in the industry of telecommunication in early Hong Kong. After several changes of ownership, it was eventually acquired by the Government of the Republic of France in 1981, and has been used as the official residence of the French Consul General ever since.
The Executive Committee is pleased to present this special home visit to the official residence of the French Consul General Mr. Arnaud Barthelemy and Mrs. Elisa Barthelemy. They have graciously agreed to open their home to members for an evening of wine tasting. Guided by a professional wine taster, members will have fun judging the qualities of a variety of French wines following the "five S" steps of see, swirl, sniff, sip, and savour. After the tasting, a menu of light canapes will be served.
